Meaning

Translation

I am such a sinner, O Lord. God gave me body and soul, but I have not practiced loving devotional worship to Him. What purpose have you been created for in this world? What fruit have you gained from this life? God is the boat to carry you across the terrifying worldly ocean. He is the fulfiller of the mind’s desires. You have not centred your mind on Him, even for an instant. [1] Others’ wealth, others’ bodies, others’ wives, others’ slander and others’ fights – I have not given them up. For the sake of these things the cycle of birth and death continues again and again and this story never ends. [2] That house, in which the Saints speak about the Lord - I have not visited it, even for an instant. Instead, I associate with the corrupt, thieving, and deluded people. [3] Lust, anger, illusion, arrogance, and jealousy: this is what I have collected within myself. Yet, compassion, righteousness, and service to the Guru – these do not exist in me, even in my dreams. [4] He is the merciful to the downtrodden, compassionate and benevolent, the lover of His devotees, and destroyer of fear. Says Sant Kabir, “Please protect Your humble servant from disaster. O Lord I serve only You.” [5]
